The Nine Row

Thanks to Rob Smith for the picture below. This row of old cottages were called the ‘Nine Row’ and they were located in the short section of Rosegarth Street that was on the opposite side of Lincoln Lane from the main part of Rosegarth Street.

When the fire station was moved from West Street to Lincoln Lane it stood on the wasteland pictured at the front of the cottages although by that time they had been demolished for many years.

‘Happy days, Boston 1928’ is etched on the negative of this picture taken outside one of the Nine Row cottages, Phyllis Cochrane (nee Betts) is standing on the far right. In the 1920’s the property was owned by George Pinches. His Great Niece said that the cottages were of poor quality and Mr. Pinches spent little money on improving them.

  3. I have seen the picture 'Happy Days' in Lincoln Lane area of Boston. I wonder if it's possible to get a copy of this from an original, when I print it up myself it's not awfully clear and I would like my 90 year old mother to have a look at it as she would most probably know some of the people. It would be of great interest to her as well as myself.
I am a newcomer to your site, and would say it is the best one I've seen on Boston.

  4. I'm sorry Gaz this was scanned from a newspaper so I don't have the original. I'm sure you could make it so it would print out nicely somehow but I don't know much about that side of things. Sorry I can't help you.

  5. My Great-Great-Grandfather Frederick Gilchrist was born in 1849 and lived in Nine Row as a boy. By the age of 12 he was living off the London Road, so hopefully things had improved for them.
