Tank and Cannons

At the end of the Crimean War in 1856 Two Russian Cannon which had been captured at Sebastopol during 1854-5 were presented to the town by the War Office.

Later on they were joined by a First World War tank and were said to have been destroyed for scrap metal during the Second World War, although an anonymous commenter (see below) said that he played around them when he was a child and he was born in 1939.

  1. Aquisition of the two cannon was enabled by Herbert Ingram and their transport by sea from Woolwich was paid for by him. They were unloaded at the town quay opposite the Custom House I believe. I'd like to know from the Borough Council/Guildhall 'Museum' where they are and why they cannot be replaced at the War Memorial ??????

  2. I'm sure they were scrapped in the second world war.

  3. they were not scrapped i remember as a child playing round them i was born in 1939 and lived in fountain lane
